Handling Vehicles in Your Estate Plan

One of the most common assets in estate planning can also be one of the most problematic. Vehicles are often overlooked or ignored in both will-based and trust-based estate planning because people simply don’t know what to do to easily pass a vehicle to a spouse, child or sibling.
Part of the problem is that vehicles are often owned individually. Not for any particular reason. Most likely, one spouse was busy doing chores or taking the kids to soccer practice while the other spouse visited the dealership and signed all the paperwork to purchase the new vehicle. Not many spouses even know if their vehicles are individually owned or jointly owned without checking the vehicle title.
