Change of Domicile: What are the Rules?

Here we are again. It’s early January in Vermont. The days are too short and there are three, maybe four, months to slog through before spring displaces winter’s icy grip. Holiday cards picturing family friends full of smiles in balmy Florida have only recently been taken down. The weather here is dreary. Occasionally, thoughts turn to leaving Vermont’s cold behind for the winter months . . . and maybe longer.

For many clients, changing your principal residence to another state is out of the question. You are Vermonters through and through, and that will never change. For others, when the issues of cost of living expenses and taxes are added to the discussion, the conversation takes a more serious turn.
