Digital Assets: A Solution for a Growing Problem

Digital assets are unique in the estate planning world and need to be handled correctly, or else you risk leaving your survivors hamstrung in their efforts to wrap up your affairs. What digital assets, you ask? Digital assets include information stored on your computer, from important documents, work papers, and email accounts to photographs, recipes and other personal records. Digital assets also include assets not on your computer, but held by a “custodian,” including information on social media sites, online banking, online shopping and the like. All told, almost all of us have digital assets, and some of us have a lot more than we realize. If you review every site on your computer that requires a password, that will give you some idea of the extent of your digital assets.
