For those clients who think of their pets as family members, and two thirds of pet owners do, there is an increasing awareness that part of one’s responsibility in caring for a dependent animal involves ensuring that plans are in place for the animal’s care in the event the owner becomes incapacitated or dies. The reality is that confusion often surrounds a person’s unexpected illness, accident or death, and in the space of a few short days, pets can suffer and die simply through lack of attention. Additionally, pets may end up euthanized at a local animal shelter if no plans exist for who will take and care for a pet, after the death of the pet’s owner.
