How the American Family is Evolving Over Time

It has been reported in the past few years that the traditional American family unit of two parents in their first marriage with children would soon no longer represent a majority of families in this country. The primary competing living arrangements are: (1) blended families, defined as a household with a stepparent, step-sibling or a half-sibling; (2) co-habitating unmarried parents; and (3) single parents. Has the “traditional family” structure fallen below 50 percent of all families in this country, or is this just another urban myth that has no grounding in reliable figures?
